Brain Tumor Talk Ep. 8: A Young Couple Living Life to the Fullest with Brain Cancer

In Episode 8 of Brain Tumor Talk, we hear the inspiring story of DJ and Erin Stewart, a young couple who have faced the challenges of glioblastoma together. From navigating a life-changing diagnosis to their advocacy work within the brain tumor community, this conversation highlights resilience, love, and the importance of living fully.

At just 28 years old, DJ’s life took an unexpected turn. For months, he had been experiencing unsettling episodes he described as “deja vu attacks,” which culminated in a seizure on the first day of a new job. DJ and his fiancée, Erin, were newly engaged and filled with excitement for their future together when they were faced with the devastating news: DJ had glioblastoma.

Despite the odds, DJ and Erin have dedicated their lives to making a difference. DJ is a passionate skateboarder and advocate, while Erin has been his steadfast caregiver and partner. Together, they’ve turned their personal experiences into advocacy by working for Head for the Cure and creating the Rare Enough podcast to inspire others.

Their journey has taken them across the country, connecting with others affected by brain cancer and reinforcing the importance of a strong support system. Through attending events, building relationships, and sharing their story, DJ and Erin have found purpose and community in the brain tumor space.

“We’ve met incredible people through this community,” Erin says. “It’s not a club anyone wants to join, but it’s made up of the best people.”

DJ and Erin also share how their relationship grew stronger through the challenges of cancer. They discuss the emotional toll of caregiving, the importance of communication, and the practical aspects of navigating a complex diagnosis. Erin’s proactive approach to researching treatment options—like advocating for Optune and Gamma Knife therapy—played a pivotal role in DJ’s journey.

“Every day becomes more important,” DJ reflects. “You don’t know what tomorrow holds, so we focus on making today count.”

In a beautiful new chapter of their journey, DJ and Erin recently celebrated the arrival of their son, Ellis. Parenthood has brought new meaning to their journey and strengthened their resolve to cherish every moment. “Now I have even more reason to stick around,” DJ shares.
